Pick up two boards — one cedar, one oak. The difference in weight tells you more about wood than any textbook.
Wood is a preserved structure, not a manufactured solid. Once you see that, grain, strength and movement all stop being mysteries — and you can start telling a good board from a bad one before you pay for it.
A tree is a water pump, and the pipework stays
A tree has one main job: move water from the roots up to the leaves. It does that through millions of microscopic tubes running the whole length of the trunk. When the tree becomes a board, those tubes are still there. Same alignment, same direction — just dried and cut.
That alignment is what I’m looking at when I check a board on the lorry. What everyone calls grain is the visible trace of those tubes, and it runs one way through the whole length of the timber.
Which is why direction matters so much once you start cutting:
- Along the grain — wood is strong and has a bit of give in it.
- Across the grain — it’s far more brittle, and it will split along the grain more easily than you’d expect.
That’s not a rule someone invented. It’s the shape of the structure. Once you know the grain runs one way, you can predict where a board will split, which way it’ll bend, and where a fixing will hold.
I see this every week: the same oak, cut two different ways, behaves like two different materials. A board that’s going to be a tabletop needs to be looked at along its length, because that’s the direction it has to stay flat in. A board going into a frame is judged more on what its end grain tells you.
No two boards are the same board
Steel comes out of a mill to a spec. Wood doesn’t. Every board comes from one individual tree that grew in one particular place, at one particular speed, and was cut from one particular part of that trunk.
Two boards of the same species can behave like different materials, because of:
- how fast the tree grew
- how much water it got while it was growing
- how tight or wide the growth rings are
- which part of the trunk the board was cut from
This is the honest answer to “is this a good board?” — it depends what you’re building. A board that’s hopeless for a tabletop can be perfect for a shed frame. There’s no such thing as a bad species, only the wrong board for the job.
It’s also why anyone with time in the trade reads the grain before cutting rather than after. I do it on the yard when I’m picking stock out for someone: same species, same sizes, and I’ll still pull boards with different ring patterns because I know they’ll behave differently under a plane.
The two boards tip at the top is the fastest way in. Cedar is light, oak is heavy, and that weight difference is density — how much actual wood there is in the same volume. Denser timber is generally stronger and harder-wearing, and it also moves more when the moisture changes. So the heavy board isn’t automatically the better one. It’s the better one if you need strength and you’re prepared to allow for movement.
Wood moves, and it only really moves one way
The trade word is anisotropic, which sounds worse than it is. It just means wood behaves differently depending on which direction you measure it. Wood is also hygroscopic — it takes moisture from the air and gives it back, for as long as it exists.
Put those two together and you get the rule that matters most:
- Along the grain — wood barely moves. Dimensionally stable.
- Across the grain — it swells and shrinks with the seasons.
That’s the whole reason a wooden door sticks in a wet summer and frees off again in winter. It’s not a fault and it’s not drying gone wrong. It’s the timber doing what timber does.
Get this wrong and you get cupped panels, cracked tops and joints that open up after a year. Get it right — leave the board room to move — and you make something that outlives you.
What to take to the yard
Three things worth holding on to:
- Grain is structure, not decoration. It tells you which way the board will split and bend.
- Uniformity is a myth. Judge the board in front of you for the job in front of you.
- Movement is across the grain. Design for it instead of fighting it.
None of this needs a moisture meter or a textbook. Pick two boards up and feel the weight difference. Look at the end grain. You’ll learn more in five minutes in a yard than an hour reading about it.
And when you’re buying, ask. If a board’s meant for outside and it’s been cut the wrong way, that’s worth knowing before it’s on your bench rather than after. A supplier who can’t or won’t tell you is telling you something too.
